Scholarships for Outstanding Students to Study at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the largest publicly funded tertiary institution in terms of student number and one of the oldest universities in Hong Kong, is now recruiting students from overseas. Outstanding students will be offered scholarships up to US$11,500.

It is the mission of the University to provide high quality education of an applied nature meeting the changing requirements of the world. There are 26 academic departments under six faculties, including that of Business and Information Systems; Health and Social Sciences; Engineering; Communication; Construction and Land Use; Applied Science and Textiles.

“We offer more than 80 academic programmes, ranging from Higher Diploma to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Many of our programmes are among the best in Asia. Our students are readily employable after graduation, and are ranked first in terms of practicality among all local tertiary institutions,” said Prof. Philip Yeung, Vice President of PolyU.

Overseas students have the privilege of paying a tuition fee same as that for local students, which is highly subsidized by the local government. Students with outstanding academic merit can apply for the PolyU International Student Scholarships, each of an amount of up to US$11,500 a year, tenable for three years, to cover both the tuition fee and living expenses.

“At PolyU, we use English as the formal medium of instruction and assessment. We also promote a bilingual culture on campus. Students are exposed to both English and Chinese, the most spoken languages of the world, and provided with opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of the culture, society and people of China,” said Prof. Yeung.

Hong Kong is one of the most prosperous metropolitan cities of China and the world. With China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), and becoming the world’s focal point of economic development, such exposure will create a competitive edge for students’ future career development.

Students who are interested in studying at PolyU should have achieved good results in appropriate examinations preparing for university entrance, or completed the first year of a recognized degree programme. High school leavers this year are also eligible to apply and, if successful, will be given a conditional offer subject to their final academic results.

The application deadline for the 2002-2003 entry cohort is 28 February 2002. Programme information and application forms are obtainable from PolyU’s Academic Exchange and Collaboration Office (fax : 852-23339974, email : oanotice@polyu.edu.hk).
