| Principal Hong Kong Economic
and Trade Representative in Tokyo, Miss Cheung Man-yee, today (February 20) called
on Japanese businessmen wishing to enter the China market to make good use of
the unique advantages of Hong Kong in making their inroads into this huge market. Addressing over 200 prominent guests at a business reception in Nagasaki, Miss Cheung said these advantages included Hong Kong's financial and legal services, port and airport facilities, high quality professionals with excellent knowledge of doing business in China and their extensive network of contacts. "Japanese enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises which may not have a lot of direct overseas investment experience, may consider finding a partner in Hong Kong and explore business opportunities in China together. "This will enable them to benefit from the expertise and connections of their Hong Kong partners and help reduce uncertainties and improve their chances of success," she said. Noting that it had been more than four years since Hong Kong's reunification with China, Miss Cheung said "One Country, Two Systems" had been successfully implemented in Hong Kong. "Hong Kong remains a free and cosmopolitan city, an international financial and business centre widely acclaimed in the world stage," she said. Miss Cheung said she was optimistic about Hong Kong's future, not only because of the underlying strengths which made Hong Kong resilient in the past, but also because of the fact Hong Kong had the Mainland of China as its hinterland. While many countries in the world were still facing a shrinking domestic economy, she said, many analysts had pointed out that China would continue to enjoy respectable economic growth in the coming decade. The enormous business opportunities brought by China's recent accession to the WTO would provide a strong backing for Hong Kong's economic recovery, she said. The business reception was the latest of a series of major events organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo throughout Japan, with the objective of updating the Japanese community on the latest economic and political developments of Hong Kong. Earlier today, Miss Cheung also called on the Governor of the Nagasaki Prefecture, the Hon. Genjiro Kaneko; the Mayor of the Nagasaki City, Mr Iccho Ito, and the Chairman of the Nagasaki Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Genji Nozaki. End/Wednesday,February 20, 2002 |
